Description Wei-Chun Chung 2012-02-16 06:32:10 UTC
As this screenshot, I've installed Evince and Firefox within gnome 3.

But the "open with" behaviour is not the same as before. Now there is no default applications can be chosen for Firefox, but I still can open files in Nautilus after download.

1. I've tested with Firefox 3.6, 9, and 10, but the problem is the same.

2. I've copy another work mimeTypes.rdf from .mozilla/firefox/{profile} of an Ubuntu box with gnome 3. After that, there is a content type name PDF and action is "always ask". But the content type in Ubuntu is "PDF document".

3. If I manually set Evince in "browser", it can work. But if I did not check the "automatically", the configuration lost. I should do the same step again in next download.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. A newly installation of gnome 3 and Firefox (9/10)
2. Open any files in website and use "open with" via manual chosen program
3. The set up association will lost if not set "automatically"
Actual Results:
There is no default associations for list. And the manual setting will be lost if not check the automatically box.

Expected Results:
There should have a list for file association. For example: pdf with evince, doc/xls/... with libreoffice and etc.

In my previously installed gnome 2.3x and Firefox 9, the behaviour is correct. There are listing for default application can be chosen.

This problem is due to GIO not being enabled in the builds from Mozilla. Sorry, but we are unable to fix this until they make the change from GnomeVFS to GIO.
Comment 3 Wei-Chun Chung 2012-02-17 04:30:35 UTC
Thanks. I've built Firefox 9.0 and all works. Hope Mozilla can find out a better way handling the change by gnomevfs and gio. The built time is too long for a old machine.

I agree about the build time. The issue (without wishing to put words in Mozilla's metaphorical mouth) is basically that Mozilla doesn't want to bump the GTK+/Glib versions so that the pre-built binaries will still support distros with older packages in the repos. (An example would be CentOS/RHEL 5.x)

I've installed gnome-vfs manually with firefox-bin, but it seems useless. Is it possible to run pre-built firefox with packages we can install from portages?
