The first time you start /opt/DBDesigner4/startdbd you must run it as root. There are a lot of symbolic links to be set. Thereafter anyone can start DBDesigner4.

dbdesigner requires lib-compat it should be included as a dependency for the ebuild

correct startdbd.desktop file

there is a correct one .desktop file as that one provided with package is
"strange" (Exec=/home/mike/../mike/DBDesigner4/startdbd)
it should be copied over to /usr/share/applications during emerge
