Description Martin Mokrejš 2012-01-30 13:10:34 UTC
During bootup of an ~amd64 computer I get:

INIT: Entering runlevel: 3

syslogd: /var/log/news/news.crit: No such file or directory
syslogd: /var/log/news/news.err: No such file or directory

 * sysklogd -> start: klogd ...                                             [ ok ]

vostro ~ # ls -laR /var/log/news/

vostro ~ # ls -la /dev/*console*
crw------- 1 mmokrejs root 5, 1 Jan 30 13:52 /dev/console
vostro ~ #

The /dev/console was created for me through xdm I guess:
# emerge -pv xdm
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] x11-apps/xdm-1.1.11 USE="ipv6 pam" 0 kB

Maybe it is not expected that one has newsyslog installed instead of syslong-ng?
# emerge -pv app-admin/newsyslog
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] app-admin/newsyslog-1.1 0 kB

Er, so is it sysklogd or newsyslog that should be mentioned in the Summary?

> Er, so is it sysklogd or newsyslog that should be mentioned in the Summary?

Neither. ;) But, sysklogd startup script output said:

syslogd: /var/log/news/news.crit: No such file or directory

so from that I infer it probably reads some config file of that daemon and does not expect newsyslogd installed. I just a quick look into sysklogd manpage and such impression. But I did not bother to study this in more detail, sorry. I just did not like syslog-ng so thought newsyslogd will make me more happy. ;-)
Comment 3 Ben Kohler gentoo-dev 2012-01-30 21:40:29 UTC
I can't figure out what debug/verbose output you have turned on for syslogd, mine (of the same version) just silently proceeds after failing to open these files. And I can see yours proceeds and starts, just not silently.

Looks to me like the default syslog.conf expects /var/log/news to exist, so the ebuild should "dodir /var/log/news" in src_install.

But the /dev/xconsole can probably just be ignored.
Comment 4 Martin Mokrejš 2012-01-30 22:04:18 UTC
I do not know what debug I turned on ... :(

app-admin/sysklogd-1.5-r2 was built with the following:
USE="(multilib)"

#

The xconsole is probably explained in the syslog.conf file itself. Will attach it. Looks ebuild should have called the xconsole utility on my behalf.

I got the same errors on a freshly installed amd64 system
Comment 8 Lars Wendler (Polynomial-C) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-12-17 09:45:53 UTC
I suppose the following lines from /etc/syslog.conf should be commented by default:

  news.crit /var/log/news/news.crit
  news.err /var/log/news/news.err
  news.notice -/var/log/news/news.notice

They seem to be the source of the error messages.

For some reasons in the past /var/log/news was present in the default installation, now this is not the case. Yes, if INN is not installed it make sense to comment those lines. I tried in that way and the errors are gone.

I've just hit this same bug on an install today. I'm happy to try and write a patch/new syslog.conf however I don't know if we should be creating the missing directories, or not trying to read/write them?

I think this is the solution. Got to the same bug on freshly installed gentoo. Using syklogd as logger (AMD64) with OpenRC as init.

The message appears after a shutdown or restart (but not always, maybe in 1 of 8 tries) and the system will not shutdown (or reboot). Have to force shutting down using the power button, leaving the filesystem dirty (upon restart, the filesystem is automatically repaired).
