Description aditsu 2012-01-29 11:03:30 UTC
I've experienced this problem from time to time (quite rarely) - while doing something on the computer, e.g. playing a youtube clip, editing an image in gimp, switching windows and stuff - X suddenly froze, keyboard not responding (not even caps lock, ctrl-alt-f1 or ctrl-alt-del), mouse cursor still moving but buttons not responding. The computer is still accessible through ssh, the X process is using 100% cpu, and the Xorg log is showing:

I was able to stop and restart the xdm service (through ssh) and use the computer again without rebooting.

Reproducible: Sometimes

1) Please post your output of `emerge -vpq x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers' in a comment.
2) Superficially this looks like a duplicate of bug #395547.
Comment 2 aditsu 2012-01-30 12:46:18 UTC
1) # emerge -vpq x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers
[ebuild R ] x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-290.10 USE="acpi gtk (multilib) -custom-cflags"

2) The xorg log doesn't look similar, but the symptoms do. And the problem has been happening for quite a long time (with different driver versions), but rarely, this is maybe the 5th time in a year or so for me.
Also, there are lots of people reporting similar problems on the internet (with no definitive solution).

What nvidia card do you have? How old is it? Could it be a hardware problem?
Comment 4 aditsu 2012-02-01 03:53:24 UTC
It's an Asus EN210

I bought it on 5 April 2011, after my old card died.
I don't think it's a hardware problem, but I can't say it's impossible.

It just happened again.

99% of the time this is bad RAM, bad power, both or a bad card. In fact, 100% of the time.
