Looks like desktop usage is discouraged as Gnome3 won't default to enable nautilus to drawn desktop at all and other solutions like Cinnamon look to do the same. 

The idea is to recommend our Gnome2 users to reorganize their files away from desktop, we could also mention some "proper" locations like those specified by xdg-user-dirs (current Gnome2 setups should handle all this directories properly for some time)
