I updated xpdf to version 3.0, and did emerge xpdf-japanese.
The xpdfrc file is modified with etc-update. 

I encounter the messages below with a Japanese pdf file:

Error: Unknown config file command 'displayCIDFontX' (/etc/xpdfrc:22)
Error: -- Xpdf no longer supports X fonts
Error: Couldn't find a font for 'GothicBBB-Medium-Identity-H'

and, I don't see any Japanese character on the xpdf window.

fixed in xpdf-3.00-r2.

note: you no longer need xpdf-japanese, bug you have to set LINGUAS="ja" in /etc/make.conf
