This program is "dead" upstream. https://gitorious.org/kmess/kmess The principal maintainer said that he not uses anymore msn, so, it will no develop it. Anyway it does not work properly since qt4.7 was introduced. So just for your info we will have a new kde compatible IM in tree: http://dot.kde.org/2011/12/07/kde-telepathy-02-future-free-communication ( atm is in kde overlay, and johu said to move it the tree for next release)
Release of telepathy-kde 0.3 will be on 2012/28/01, i suggest to wait with the mask until telepathy-kde is in tree.

kmess is not part of the KDE project. The fact that kopete or kde-telepathy work does not mean kmess is broken. Kmess has a patch that workarounds the latest msn problems. Until this program becomes really unusable it will stay on portage tree. Feel free to use alternative IMs if kmess does not work for you.
