I found the LWP::UserAgent module is part of libwww-perl. I think this this might be what g-cpan is referring to in the message it gives. Unfortunately the message "... is part of the core perl install" is very misleading because "perl core" is the name for all the modules that are bundled with perl (http://perldoc.perl.org/index-modules-A.html). This is specifically what I was misunderstanding. I think either g-cpan needs to use a more appropriate message, perhaps "... is in portage", or the message should specify the package name containing the module.
