'etc-update' has been reported to fix this *genkernel-3.4.21.2 (06 Jan 2012) 06 Jan 2012; Robin H. Johnson <robbat2@gentoo.org> -genkernel-3.4.21.1.ebuild, +genkernel-3.4.21.2.ebuild: 3.4.21.1 accidently changed a default that meant no modules in initramfs, leading to unbootable setups. Change it back.

Change it back. Thanks Robin, the system was still updating as I was rebuilding the kernel. Geoff
You need to add "--install" to your command as its commented out in /etc/genkernel.conf #INSTALL="yes"
This was already fixed in the tree.
(In reply to comment #5) > This was already fixed in the tree. Roger that ,,, I edited the file and all proceded as normal. all further operations regarding genkernel have been successful. So I recon this can be closed. Geoff
