I could remove the slot conflict for vlc by removing the kde USE flag from vlc.
But if I then want to emerge paraview, mayavi or root I get again the slot conflict.

Finally I could solve the issue by adding qt3support to /etc/make.conf or switching from default/linux/amd64/10.0 profile to default/linux/amd64/10.0/desktop respectively.

It looks like emerge suggests wrong USE changes in order to satisfy the dependencies.

Initially it suggests enabling USE=qt3support for qt-{core,gui,sql}, but that isn't enough, because qt-{assistant,declarative,opengl} have a [qt3support=] dep, thus qt3support must be enabled for them too. Therefore this suggestion is incomplete.

Then it suggests enabling many USE flags in many different qt-* packages, such as "qpa", "aqua", "debug", ... that are totally unrelated to this problem and enabling them won't solve anything. Ideally portage should suggest the minimal set of changes required to solve the deptree. (BTW one of those flags, "aqua", is even masked in the active profile.) This suggestion is therefore useless.

In this case the (only) correct solution is to enable USE=qt3support for all x11-libs/qt-* packages that have such a flag. The resolver seems unable to reach this conclusion though.

Anyway I'm not really sure if this is a valid issue... @dev-portage, what do you think? Perhaps specifying a higher backtrack count might help in this case? Anything else that could be improved?

Well, it would require a lot of backtracking, and would probably take far too long. Users just have to be taught to enable or disable flags like those globally.

Yeah, enable or disable qt3support globally, and add --update --deep to options should help. If that alone doesn't solve it, also use --backtrack=30 or more, in addition to the qt3support settings and --update --deep options.

Also add --newuse to make sure the USE=qt3support changes are effective.
