Description Joseph 2011-12-26 00:55:17 UTC
When I boot my box I see BIOS message but next screen should show Grub kernel selection, but my display goes blank (no picture)
I have only two selections (two kernels) so I just hit enter and the computer boots normally and picture shows up.

In grub.conf I don't have any special options:
default 0
timeout 30
#splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title Gentoo Current Kernel
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/kernel-current root=/dev/sda3
#initrd /boot/initramfs-genkernel-x86-2.6.24-gentoo-r5

title Gentoo Old Kernel
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/kernel-old root=/dev/sda3

Monitor is BenQ V2400W
The video card is Asus EAH6770 DC SL 2DI1GD5
Single monitor, connected to it to VGA port.

Reproducible: Always

Please post your output of `emerge -vpq sys-boot/grub' in a comment.
Comment 2 Joseph 2011-12-27 02:29:04 UTC
 emerge -vpq sys-boot/grub
[ebuild R ] sys-boot/grub-0.97-r10 USE="ncurses -custom-cflags -netboot -static"

I would like to add that this video card has interfaces:
D-Sub Output
DVI Output : Yes x 1 , Yes x 1 (via HDMI to DVI adaptor x 1)
HDMI Output

The monitor has input:
D-Sub, DVI-D, HDMI

I loaded standard open source kernel driver for this card: (radeon/JUNIPER_me.bin radeon/JUNIPER_pfp.bin radeon/JUNIPER_rlc.bin)

but the only cable that works is VGA
HDMI to HDMI does not work
nor DVI-D to HDMI

I get no picture at all.

Does your BIOS display correctly to all monitors? This is completely independent of firmware you listed, that's for the kernel only, and not GRUB.

1. Reinstall grub, make sure you do the emerge --config grub AND redo the setup/install phase to your MBR.
2. Debug instructions
1.1. Connect all 3 cables to the single monitor.
1.2. Raise the grub timeout much higher, like 3 minutes (180).
1.3. You're going to boot 3 times, once for the monitor set to each of the outputs.
1.4. During the BIOS, check that there is output on ALL 3 cables (if there isn't, it's NOT a grub problem), using input choice cycling on the monitor.
1.5. After the BIOS, when Grub should be sitting at the prompt, also cycle inputs on the monitor.
3. Can you get 3 different monitors, connect all 3 of them to the graphics card simultaneously, and boot, seeing which of them gives BIOS output, and GRUB output?
Comment 4 Joseph 2011-12-27 22:36:45 UTC
Yes, I reinstall "grub" and I think the problem might be the video card and/or monitor.
The monitor does not somehow recognize the video signal instantly it takes time.
This card seems to me much slower than my older one.
