Description Vieri 2011-12-22 11:08:57 UTC
I get an error while compiling the kernel (manually or using genkernel --menuconfig all):

make[1]: *** No rule to make target `/lib/firmware/./', needed by `/lib/firmware/atmsar11.fw'. Stop.

I suppose it may be due to the version of "make" or to a change in the kernel module code. Or maybe I'm missing extra firmware code I should emerge before trying to compile the kernel?

In any case, I disabled building this driver since I don't need it:

vendor: 111d ("Integrated Device Technology, Inc."), device: 0001 ("IDT77201/77211 155Mbps ATM SAR Controller [NICStAR]")
vendor: 111d ("Integrated Device Technology, Inc."), device: 0003 ("IDT77222/77252 155Mbps ATM MICRO ABR SAR Controller")

by disabling the following in the Kernel menu config:

Device Drivers -> Network device support -> ATM drivers -> IDT 77252 (NICStAR II)

I don't know what users who actually need this ATM driver need to do...

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. compile kernel 3.0.4-hardened-r5 with IDT 77252 (NICStAR II) device driver
2.
3.
Actual Results:
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `/lib/firmware/./', needed by `/lib/firmware/atmsar11.fw'. Stop.

Can you try to emerge net-wireless/atmel-firmware first and see if that fixes it?

I emerged net-wireless/atmel-firmware and then rebuilt the kernel by enabling:

Device Drivers -> Network device support -> ATM drivers -> IDT 77252 (NICStAR
II)

It all went fine.

Genkernel could make some extra checks before launching "make" but I realize it's asking too much when there are a lot more important things to maintain.

You can close the bug report if you want.

Thanks

Actually this is an important dependency to bring in, but not at all easy to pull off because depending on a particular firmware package is contingent on the kernel options chosen. On the other hand, if this isn't done automagically, then we must depend on the user to know what firmware they need. The only think I can think of in situations like this is documenting it.

I'm going to close this but cc the genkernel folks (kernel@ is already cc-ed). Maybe someone will think of a good place to throw an alert message.
