Description Evan Teran 2011-12-19 21:07:06 UTC
app-emulation/vmware-modules-238.5 fails to build against gentoo-sources-3.1.5. Appears to be an issue with the vmnet driver.

Reproducible: Always

Comment 2 Evan Teran 2011-12-19 21:21:29 UTC
So I did some digging and it seems that the failure to build for me is due to the following defines not being present:

#define HAVE_ALLOC_NETDEV
#define HAVE_NETIF_QUEUE
#define HAVE_NETDEV_PRIV
#define HAVE_NET_DEVICE_OPS

manually placing them at the top of compat_netdevice.h makes things build properly.

I am not sure what the mechanism is to properly define them however, so I cannot create a patch quite yet. I'll keep digging :-)
Comment 3 Evan Teran 2011-12-19 21:29:51 UTC
OK, it seems that these defines were historically found in /usr/src/linux/include/linux/netdevice.h but simply arent present anymore. I guess the devs decided that the 3.1 version there would be no option to not build it with these things enabled.

So I think the current reasonable solution is to simply test the kernel version and set the defines if >= 3.1.0

I'll attach a patch.

thanks for that patch :)

I just confirm this works for vmware-modules-208.2 with gentoo-sources-3.1.6

I could have made this a duplicate of bug #384105, but it's about a different repo.

I still run into the following error:

This is different. Please open new bug.

Sorry but this has already been my original error report for bug 397847 which was (inadvertently?) marked by Jeroen Roovers as a duplicate of this bug.
