The VLC ebuild should create a menu entry in the GNOME/KDE Applications menus. I have attached a suggested menu entry file. It should be named "vlc.desktop" and placed in /usr/share/applications, and this is all the ebuild needs to do.

Note that the preferred name for VLC is "VLC Media Player" instead of "VideoLAN
Client," according to the website

There already is a .desktop entry in the debian/ and ipkg/ dirs.
I'll try to improve the installation of this for other platforms.
