Current stable josm is 4550, released 2011-10-30. Version in portage is 5 months old. See http://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/VersionHistory for new features. Note that the ebuild needs to add "subversion>=1.7" in DEPENDS, because building josm-4550 fails with subversion 1.6. Dont know why subversion is involved since this isn't the live ebuild, but upgrading subversion was necessary for me.

Thanks :) The subversion dependency does need to be added though. Subversion 1.7 is in ~arch for now, so it won't be installed automatically. With subversion 1.6 installed, the build fails with : create-revision: [exec] Result: 1 [xmlproperty] [Fatal Error] REVISION.XML:6:1: XML document structures must start and end within the same entity. BUILD FAILED /var/tmp/portage/sci-geosciences/josm-4550/work/josm/build.xml:32: Failed to load /var/tmp/portage/sci-geosciences/josm-4550/work/josm/REVISION.XML and the file REVISION.XML contains this svn error message : # cat /var/tmp/portage/sci-geosciences/josm-4550/work/josm/REVISION.XML <?xml version="1.0"?> <info> svn: The path '.' appears to be part of a Subversion 1.7 or greater working copy. Please upgrade your Subversion client to use this working copy.
Could you please close or/and comment on the following issue about josm ? https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=385717
I had a look at 385717 and gave a detailed comment there. Short story : * The need for svn to build from the tarball can be considered an upstream packaging bug. * As a temporary fix for gentoo, subversion>=1.7 should be added to the DEPEND of the stable ebuilds.
(In reply to comment #4) > * The need for svn to build from the tarball can be considered an upstream > packaging bug. Could you try to use the new packed tar.xz from http://opensource.pennewiss.de/josm/ I wrote a bash script which repacks the svn-repository without svn-dependency. I'm not a Java-coder but this repack works for me. If it works i'll also provide newer versions... We should also mark this bug as a duplicate of #385717 or vice-versa
