I can't reproduce this bug with dev-python/sphinx-1.1.2 from Progress Overlay.
I've successfully installed spyder[doc] with python-2.7.2-r3 and sphinx-1.1.

I also can't reproduce it, effectively installs sphinx.errors.ConfigError: There is a syntax error in your configuration file: invalid syntax (conf.py, line 13) smacks of "You are using the wrong (eselect) system python." eselecting python2.6 and emerging sphinx sees it installed in python3.2/site-packages because my PYTHON_ABIS entry and the sphinx ebuild point it there. I don.t see this is a spyder bug, rather a misnomer. It just demos sphinx doesn't work with python2.6, at least in the context of your system setup. So where is the problem when you can happily emerge with 3.2? (if I disable USE_PYTHON="2.6", spyder is installed correctly) answers all. You don't so much need to disable python2.6 as enable 3.2 and let it play too. Perhaps the moral is to set RESTRICT-ABIS in sphinx. Well let's see. sphinx 1.1.2 in progress; PYTHON_RESTRICTED_ABIS="2.4" sphinx 1.1 in portage; RESTRICT_PYTHON_ABIS="3.*" Hmmm, no wonder your system came to grief. sheesh, these two settings are contradictory, not quite mutually exclusive, and in fact are not even the same variable. Python team and/or grozin@gentoo, please consider the portage entry is likely wrong. Between the two and this bug, looks more like; 1. this bug need be re-titled dev-python/sphinx-1.1 2. one or the other variables ="2.[46]" or even "2.*"
I think, guys, you've stumbled away from issue. I did a bit of research and I blame newlines in `doc/conf.py`: % unzip /usr/portage/distfiles/spyder-2.1.2.zip % cd spyder-2.1.2 % sphinx-build-2.6 doc doc_output Configuration error: There is a syntax error in your configuration file: invalid syntax (conf.py, line 13) % dos2unix doc/conf.py dos2unix: converting file doc/conf.py to Unix format ... % sphinx-build-2.6 -P doc doc_output <output skipped> build succeeded, 5 warnings. So simple `sed` line in ebuild should fix it: sed -i 's:\r::g' "$S"/doc/conf.py But I don't expirience the issue as it is reported, perhaps due to patch fixing bug #390961.

Arfrever walked me through testing this; sphinx-1.1 was the problem. Fixed in sphinx-1.1.2.
