I had gentoo-kernel 2.4.20 and xfree-drm-4.3.0-r7, everything was fine. I changed to vanilla-kernel 2.4.24 + evms patches and xfree-drm-4.3.0-r6. Then I had lots of crashes in 3 days, most of them when playing enemy territory. I also had very strange display corruption when switching from X to a console (framebuffer). I then changed to xfree-drm-4.3.0-r7 and no more crashes, no more display corruptions. I have an ati radeon 8500 and VIDEO_CARDS="radeon". I suggest using xfree-drm-4.3.0-r7 for radeons. xfree-drm-4.3.0-r6 seems worse than xfree-drm-4.3.0-r[23] and xfree-drm-4.3.0-r7 Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. play enemy territory from 10 seconds to 90 minutes 2. 3. Actual Results: system completly freezes while playing a reset is needed Expected Results:
Can you post whatever logs are available after a restart? For example, the /var/log/XFree86.0.log (make sure you get this BEFORE starting X again) and the end of /var/log/messages. Also, is the machine remotely pingable or not (i.e., is it a complete lockup)? Try disabling framebuffer (are you using VESA or radeonfb?).
well, I don't have XFree's logs anymore. If you insist I'll reinstall xfree-drm-4.3.0-r6. I saw nothing in systems logs. I've not tested if the machine was pingable. again I'll test that if you want. I'm using radeonfb since 2 years, never had a problem with it, I won't disable it.
OK, I'll just assume it's some issue fixed in -r7 and mark that stable, since it's already been there for a month and a half. If you start seeing issues again with -r7 or higher, let us know.
