Hello Gentoo !!,

When creating a USB drive with Gentoo install on its partition as described in,
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/liveusb.xml, the filesystem Gentoo resides has to have its bootable flag enabled. Not enabling the flag would give the user "No operating system" message when attemting to boot from the USB. This should be changed by launching fdisk from native operating system, and making the partition that houses Gentoo bootloader as bootable.

Failing to verify if the filesystem is bootable will help eliminate confusion as to the source of the error if any(atleast it reduces the false positives by one).

This issue is also faced other users on many forums. For example:
http://archives.gentoo.org/gentoo-user/msg_d5b8a1805599262bbc3efa14da0091ee.xml

This is a suggestion improvement that will help first time installers of Gentoo.

Thanks,
Vishnu.

from the guide:

"Create a FAT16 partition on your USB flash drive and mark it bootable using fdisk."

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdc1 * 1 250 2008124+ 6 FAT16

^^ note the Boot flag.

partitioning details are already covered in the installation handbook; it is assumed users have read the handbook and are familiar with the process.
