That line of output suggests docbook-xml-dtd:4.2 as the solution.

I know nothing about sgml and xml doc book. But I found some inconsistency in the ebuild. There is a line in the ebuild which add a string "http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook/xml/4.2/docbookx.dtd" to the manual.sgml file. But as I connect to that file and check in it, it saids the identifier should be "-//OASIS//DTD DocBook XML V4.2//EN" but not the one I found in manual.sgml which is "-//OASIS//DTD DocBook V4.2//EN": # Ensure that the documentation actually finds the DTD it needs sed -i \ -e '1s|\[$|"http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook/xml/4.2/docbookx.dtd" [|' \ doc/manual.sgml || die I change the string from "http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook/xml/4.2/docbookx.dtd" to "http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook/sgml/4.2/docbook.dtd" and now libusb can be installed. I have no idea about what happened, but I think that might have fixed this bug.

Replacing "http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook/xml/4.2/docbookx.dtd" with "http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook/sgml/4.2/docbook.dtd" did not help for me. root@cheetah:/usr/local/portage/dev-libs/libusb(19)# grep oasis libusb-0.1.12-r7.ebuild -e '1s|\[$|"http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook/sgml/4.2/docbookx.dtd" [|' \ 'emerge -v1 =libusb-0.1.12-r7' fails now with: ... mkdir html jade -t sgml -d ./website.dsl\#html ./manual.sgml jade:./manual.sgml:10:0:E: error connecting to "www.oasis-open.org" (Connection timed out) jade:./manual.sgml:10:0:E: DTD did not contain element declaration for document type name jade:./manual.sgml:12:9:E: there is no attribute "ID" jade:./manual.sgml:12:17:E: element "BOOK" undefined ... jade:./functions.sgml:112:48:E: element "PARAMETER" undefined jade:I: maximum number of errors (200) reached; change with -E option jade:/usr/share/sgml/docbook/dsssl-stylesheets-1.79/html/dblink.dsl:203:1:E: XRef LinkEnd to missing ID 'function.usbclaiminterface' jade:/usr/share/sgml/docbook/dsssl-stylesheets-1.79/html/dblink.dsl:203:1:E: XRef LinkEnd to missing ID 'function.usbopen' jade:/usr/share/sgml/docbook/dsssl-stylesheets-1.79/html/dblink.dsl:203:1:E: XRef LinkEnd to missing ID 'function.usbfindbusses' make[2]: *** [html/index.html] Error 1 on systems behind a proxy and with: jade -t sgml -d ./website.dsl\#html ./manual.sgml jade:<URL>http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook/sgml/4.2/docbookx.dtd:112:17:E: "X20AC" is not a function name jade:/usr/share/sgml/docbook/xml-dtd-4.4/ent/isoamsa.ent:42:29:E: "X021B6" is not a function name jade:/usr/share/sgml/docbook/xml-dtd-4.4/ent/isoamsa.ent:43:29:E: "X021B7" is not a function name ... jade:/usr/share/sgml/docbook/xml-dtd-4.4/ent/isoamso.ent:59:29:E: "X02118" is not a function name jade:I: maximum number of errors (200) reached; change with -E option make[2]: *** [html/index.html] Error 1 on systems which are directly connected to the internet.
In reply to Juergen, try remerging docbook-sgml-utils and docbook-sgml-dtd:4.2.
Nm, Juergen, notice it's docbook.dtd not docbookx.dtd (made the same mistake myself). After fixing that it builds for me. Can someone with commit please either fix this or ~mask the package? This is really annoying to update on all the different gentoo machines I nightly update.
Thanks CC, after I changed docbookx.dtd to docbook.dtd, 'emerge -v1 =libusb-0.1.12-r7' works now on the systems, which are directly connected to the internet. On the systems behind a proxy I still get: jade -t sgml -d ./website.dsl\#html ./manual.sgml jade:./manual.sgml:10:0:E: error connecting to "www.oasis-open.org" (Connection timed out) jade:./manual.sgml:10:0:E: DTD did not contain element declaration for document type name jade:./manual.sgml:12:9:E: there is no attribute "ID" ... jade:./functions.sgml:112:48:E: element "PARAMETER" undefined jade:I: maximum number of errors (200) reached; change with -E option jade:/usr/share/sgml/docbook/dsssl-stylesheets-1.79/html/dblink.dsl:203:1:E: XRef LinkEnd to missing ID 'function.usbclaiminterface' jade:/usr/share/sgml/docbook/dsssl-stylesheets-1.79/html/dblink.dsl:203:1:E: XRef LinkEnd to missing ID 'function.usbopen' jade:/usr/share/sgml/docbook/dsssl-stylesheets-1.79/html/dblink.dsl:203:1:E: XRef LinkEnd to missing ID 'function.usbfindbusses' make[2]: *** [html/index.html] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/dev-libs/libusb-0.1.12-r7/work/libusb-0.1.12/doc' make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 root@moose:/usr/local/portage/dev-libs/libusb(18)# grep oasis libusb-0.1.12-r7.ebuild -e '1s|\[$|"http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook/sgml/4.2/docbook.dtd" [|' \
In reply to Juergen, actually I think it's ok to use local docbook.dtd, which is just what they have used in libusb-0.1.12-r5.ebuild So if your network is not so good maybe you can use the string '/usr/share/sgml/docbook/sgml-dtd-4.2/docbook.dtd'.
I had the same problem. Reemerging docbook-sgml-dtd (all installed versions), docbook-xml-dtd (all installed versions), openjade, docbook-xml-simple-dtd, docbook-dsssl-stylesheets, docbook-sgml-utils, build-docbook-catalog and sgml-common did not help. What worked, was reverting this change from the libusb-0.1.12-r7 ebuild: http://sources.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewvc.cgi/gentoo-x86/dev-libs/libusb/libusb-0.1.12-r7.ebuild?r1=1.4&r2=1.5&diff_format=u I was now able to install dev-libs/libusb-0.1.12-r7 with USE="cxx doc -debug -static-libs".
Confirming this bug and also the proposed fix above.
As a workaround which also circumvents the network problem I suggest to replace the http://... link to the dtd by a link to the dtd installed locally: /usr/share/sgml/docbook/sgml-dtd-4.2/docbook.dtd This file is installed since the package depends on app-text/docbook-sgml-dtd-4.2.
Created attachment 293697 [details, diff] use local dtd instead of online version this patch applies the changes proposed in comment #18 to the libusb-0.1.12-r7.ebuild. At my site (amd64, with USE="cxx doc -debug -static-libs"), this patched ebuild compiles and merges fine.
Will someone please put one of these fixes in? I don't really care which, they all seem to work, it just needs to get into portage.
I've fixed up the ebuilds entirely, they should use the local SGML catalog now.
I tested your (comment #21) fixed ebuild on two of my affected systems and I can confirm that the issue is fixed on both of them. Thanks!
Tested the fix, works great for me. Thank you so very very much :)
