Description florian 2011-11-03 14:22:10 UTC
Starting xdvi or xdvi-xaw from xterm (or anywhere else) makes it, well, start. It will then display the name of the loaded file in the header bar, and show only one page in its page list. The page which it displays is completely white. The system is completely unresponsive (no mouse, no reaction to any keystroke or combination); the only solution being to switch the power off.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Type "xdvi" in an xterm window (or start it from the window manager)

Actual Results:
Results as described above.

Expected Results:
[Expected behaviour is obvious, I suppose.]

The problem occured after a new installation of xdvik, but I am unable to say which version I had installed before, or to say with certainty whether it ran fine. I cannot remember having had this problem, however.

My window manager is fvwm; there were no other programs running when I reproduced the crash (several times and with two different users, and with different files).

When you say it is completely unresponsive, does that mean you can't even work around X to get a console to display more information using, say, an SSH shell opened from another machine?

Thanks very much for replying!

I'm afraid I have been working on a stand-alone machine for all my life, never using networking for anything else but connecting to the internet; thus, even though I have heard X uses a client-server architecture, I wouldn't have the slightest idea of how to use it. (I.e. can I contact the running X server "from the outside" and "ask it questions"?)

Having said that, I did manage to find a workaround to start xdvi: When I start it with a command line such as:

    > sleep 10; xdvi

and quickly switch to a console terminal before it does start, the console is not affected by xdvi in any way. I can then verify that xdvi is actually running using:

    > ps a
    1348 pts/0 S+ 0:00 xdvi-xaw -name xdvi

And even

    > kill 1348

works as supposed, i.e. xdvi disappears from the process list, and I can switch back to the X terminal and continue working. (In contrast, if I switch to the X terminal while xdvi is still running, I'm finished, because then I am stuck in the situation I described above.)

This looks to me as if xdvi is basically well-behaved - apart from freezing all in- and output on X, that is.

The only idea I had of how to learn more was to start it with strace - not because I have a clear idea of the information it provides, but I've seen other people do that. I am adding the output as an attachment.

Is there anything more informative I could do from the console?

Many thanks,

Florian

Do you suffer the same with 22.85-r1?

Thanks for getting back to this; I had forgotten, and had simply stopped using xdvi. Assuming that there had been several version changes since my bug report, I just checked the one that was on my machine before installing 22.85-r1. This installed version works completely fine. What is surprising is that it is precisely

> xdvi --version
xdvik version 22.84.16 (Xaw toolkit)
Libraries: kpathsea version 6.0.1, T1lib version 5.1.2

I can only speculate what fixed the problem. I have certainly updated my system every two or three weeks (which would amount to about 20 times since the bug report). But apart from that, I migrated the hard disk to another machine, and to make that work, I had to use a different X server module (from openchrome to nvidia)

-- Sorry for posting in the midst of writing; that was some unintended key combination. --

I also had to apply a few changes to the kernel, but I don't remember which ones.

I suspect you have more important things to do than to look into this past problem any further, but for what it's worth, I'm posting the current emerge --info. (Information specific to X would probably be what's really interesting, but I'm not savvy as to that.)

In any case, thanks a lot for getting back to this; it made me welcome xdvi back!
