I hope this is not dupe, thought I made a search

emerge Ebuild: configure error

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge -uDNavt world
2.
3.
Actual Results:
configure phase of "glibc" stops on error:
configure: error: forced unwind support is required

Expected Results:
"glibc" should re-emerge okay

> post the config.log from the build dir as well

Side note: it would be nice if portage/emerge's error message were containing path to config.log for better bug report/support... I had to use:

find /var/tmp/portage/sys-libs/glibc-2.12.2/ -name 'config.log'

, since any information, it's very probably the information thought by user as "not important" might be extremely important... I know what I am speaking of, since I am developer too...

attaching "config.log"

Comment 7 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2011-11-10 21:54:29 UTC
portage already outputs config.log paths when people use `econf`

from the log:

looks like your multilib is busted. you'll need to fix that.
Comment 8 Marian 'VooDooMan' Meravy 2011-11-27 03:33:11 UTC
IMO this is because:

--- snip ---
>>> Compiling source in /var/tmp/portage/sys-libs/glibc-2.12.2/work/glibc-2.12.2 ...
 * Auto adding -march=x86_64 to CFLAGS_x86 #185404
 * Building glibc for ABIs: x86 amd64
 * Auto adding -march=i686 to CFLAGS_x86 #185404
--- snip ---

and crossdev -> i686 installed.
Comment 9 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2011-11-29 01:32:55 UTC
i doubt it. -march controls tuning, not the ABI.
Comment 10 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2011-11-29 03:34:05 UTC

OOPS, sry I incorrectly selected whole output:

circular ~ # emerge sys-devel/gcc -qpv

Comment 13 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2011-11-29 05:45:18 UTC
your gcc has multilib masked off, but your glibc has multilib masked on. looks like the selinux profile has it forced off which explains gcc, but that doesn't explain glibc.

my guess is you've got a local change in /etc/portage/ that is wrongly turning on USE=multilib for glibc.

above snippet is there because "crossdev" has appended it into that file for itself to be able emerge i686 cross-toolchain.

PS: thank you very much for your effort in helping me with my problem! I really appreciate it!

cross-i686-pc-linux-gnu/* entries don't matter as they don't affect sys-libs/* or sys-devel/* packages

your latest output now looks correct. what did you change so that sys-libs/glibc has "(-multilib)" ?

@vapier

I can't recall changing anything regarding multilib. Maybe it comes from profile?

0 0077 06:15:19 circular ~ # ls -la /etc/make.profile
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 53 Jun  5 11:15 /etc/make.profile -> ../usr/portage/profiles/selinux/2007.0/amd64/hardened

Latest updates.

Recently, portage gave me warning that my current profile is obsolete, so I should change it to "hardened/linux/amd64/selinux". I did so via eselect.

Now the situation is a bit different:

--- snip ---
0 0077 11:13:44 circular ~ # emerge -uDNpvt world

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[nomerge       ] virtual/libstdc++-3.3
[ebuild   R    ]  sys-libs/libstdc++-v3-3.3.6  USE="(multilib*) nls" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] sys-devel/gcc-4.5.3-r1 USE="cxx fortran hardened mudflap (multilib*) nls nptl* objc objc++ objc-gc openmp (-altivec) -bootstrap -build -doc (-fixed-point) -gcj -graphite -gtk (-libffi) (-libssp) -lto -multislot -nocxx -nopie -nossp -test -vanilla" 0 kB
[ebuild   R    ] sys-apps/sandbox-2.5  USE="(multilib*)" 0 kB
[ebuild     U  ] sys-libs/glibc-2.13-r4 [2.12.2] USE="hardened (multilib) nls (selinux*) -debug -gd -glibc-omitfp -profile -vanilla" 0 kB

Total: 4 packages (1 upgrade, 3 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 0 kB
0 0077 11:14:13 circular ~ #
--- snip ---

But all these 4 packages fails to build, e.g. glibc is failing at configure phase for the same reason, "configure: error: forced unwind support is required".

Any ideas?

for the same exact reasons as cited earlier. you cannot transition from USE=-multilib to USE=multilib builds.
Comment 21 Marian 'VooDooMan' Meravy 2011-12-07 18:29:30 UTC
But from where the "(-multilib)" and "(multilib)" USE flags come from? I have not explicitly specified them, nor minus-signed them. I guess they come from profile(s) (over time).

So how could I fix this problem?

I have worked around problem by installing multilib gentoo instance in the chroot, and made binary packages of glibc and gcc, and then installed them on primary (so far) non-multilib gentoo. Now I have main multilib instance, however, I wonder what gentoo portage changed and when, since I always had multilib hardened selinux profile, and I wonder how come my profile has changed to non-multilib.
