I need the yenta_socket driver for my ThinkPad T21 and 600 so that I can initialize the pcmcia subsystem so that I can load ds and then cardctl -f so that I can get my TokenRing and Ethernet cards working. Also would be nice to have ibmtr_cs model included so that I can use my Token Ring card. Subset of lsconfig from a system working under RedHat ibmtr_cs 16132 1 ds 6880 2 [ibmtr_cs] yenta_socket 8992 2 pcmcia_core 40896 0 [ibmtr_cs ds yenta_socket]
These both seem valid to me. I think we should really compile a long list of kernel modules etc for inclusion on the x86 live cd, but being primarily ppc guy I don't think I'm the person for the job...any takers?
using a modified iso i found on the forum i could work around this problem, the yenta_socket module and many others are on this iso see more info on the forum here: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=18160 find the iso here: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=439
Unfortunately, this is more complicated than just including modules on the CD. Are you sure that i82365 (rather than yenta_socket) won't work for your laptop? As far as the token ring driver, that is a possiblity. Is it a driver in the kernel (as opposed to in the pcmcia-cs package)?
The i82365 driver does not work with any IBM Thinkpad. Cut of my .config from my kernel # # PCMCIA/CardBus support # CONFIG_PCMCIA=m CONFIG_CARDBUS=y CONFIG_TCIC=y CONFIG_I82092=y CONFIG_I82365=y # This Enables the PCMCIA Token Ring Card CONFIG_PCMCIA_IBMTR=m
I've got the exact same problem. the i82365 module doesn't work in a Toshiba Satellite 1800-504, only yenta_socket. Since I need to add a pcmcia lan card, I'm unable to install gentoo on it.
solved the problem booting with a redhat 8 cd =) more details here: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=28413

In addition to comment no. 5; yenta_socket (which I suppose is one of the modules activated by the 'Toshiba Laptop Support' kernel config parameter) is required to get PCMCIA working on a Tecra 8100 (and I imagine an 8000). I was unable to get the i82365 module to identify and interface with the controller. This was using the livecd ver. 1.4_rc2
more to it that putting it on the cd? what else is there to do other that recompile the kernel to add the yenta_socket module?
I'm a bit confused about that too, although I'm quite curious as to whether or not this has been fixed yet. There's also an issue with certain 802.11x cards and the i82365/yenta_socket modules which could pertain to the LiveCD should this module be added - see bug #23255 at http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23255
Can anybody confirm this with the 1.4 liveCD and, if not, can we then closed this bug as FIXED?
Marking for testing as it's been a while since any useable feedback.
yenta_socket is not included on the 2004.1 minimal live cd. Booting with the gentoo kernel and passing the dopcmcia option loads the i82365 module, which some suggested would work in place. I have an netgear fa411 pcmcia card. The axnet_cs driver loads without error, but running ifconfig shows only the lo interface. pcnet_cs (the module that knoppix loads, and that is supposedly inferior (but compatible) to axnet_cs) does not load with the following errors: /lib/modules/2.6.4-wolk-2.3/pcmcia/pcnet_cs.o: /lib/modules/2.6.4-wolk-2.3/pcmcia/pcnet_cs.o: unresolved symbol ei_interrupt_Rb93d8fa5 /lib/modules/2.6.4-wolk-2.3/pcmcia/pcnet_cs.o: /lib/modules/2.6.4-wolk-2.3/pcmcia/pcnet_cs.o: unresolved symbol ei_close_R3ec6f759 /lib/modules/2.6.4-wolk-2.3/pcmcia/pcnet_cs.o: /lib/modules/2.6.4-wolk-2.3/pcmcia/pcnet_cs.o: unresolved symbol ethdev_init_R82066150 /lib/modules/2.6.4-wolk-2.3/pcmcia/pcnet_cs.o: /lib/modules/2.6.4-wolk-2.3/pcmcia/pcnet_cs.o: unresolved symbol ei_open_Rf188c30d /lib/modules/2.6.4-wolk-2.3/pcmcia/pcnet_cs.o: /lib/modules/2.6.4-wolk-2.3/pcmcia/pcnet_cs.o: unresolved symbol NS8390_init_R8d7430b4 /lib/modules/2.6.4-wolk-2.3/pcmcia/pcnet_cs.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.6.4-wolk-2.3/pcmcia/pcnet_cs.o failed /lib/modules/2.6.4-wolk-2.3/pcmcia/pcnet_cs.o: insmod pcnet_cs failed
