The first thing I do whenever I boot a gentoo cd/dvd is stop the absolutely dested spind daemon (the reason for its existence absolutely fails me). However, this does not work when booting from livedvd-amd64-multilib-11.2.iso. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: # /etc/init.d/spind status * status: started Gentoo-11 ~ # ps auwx | grep spind root 18065 0.0 0.0 25388 1120 ? S 06:40 0:00 start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --exec /usr/sbin/spind root 18069 0.0 0.0 9460 1348 ? Ss 06:40 0:00 /bin/bash /usr/sbin/spind root 19107 0.0 0.0 6484 600 pts/0 S+ 06:51 0:00 grep --colour=auto spind Gentoo-11 ~ # /etc/init.d/spind stop * Stopping spind ... [ ok ] Actual Results: Gentoo-11 ~ # ps auwx | grep spind root 18065 0.0 0.0 25388 1120 ? S 06:40 0:00 start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --exec /usr/sbin/spind root 18069 0.0 0.0 9460 1348 ? Ss 06:40 0:00 /bin/bash /usr/sbin/spind root 19137 0.0 0.0 6484 596 pts/0 S+ 06:52 0:00 grep --colour=auto spind Expected Results: It should have stopped the !@#$%^&* spind daemon. At least the kill command still works.
All, spind is actually a part of livecd-tools, and I'm not sure why we have it or need it. If there is no objection, I do not have a problem with removing it and doing a new release.
William, I have no objection about dropping spind.
(In reply to comment #2) > I have no objection about dropping spind. That sounds like a GREAT solution to me. When I am doing an install, and need to run badblocks on a new 3 TB hard drive (which takes about 72 hours), the last thing in the world I want is the optical drive spinning up every few seconds.
