I haven't Polish fonts in sylpheed menu (polish translations OK)
for locale: LC_ALL=pl_PL
solution:
ln -s /etc/X11/gtk /etc/gtk
and Polish font display OK

I can't reproduce this bug.
Of course I can not read Polish words.
But it seems to work.

If this is still reproducible on your box, feel free to re-open.
