Description Morse 2011-10-21 20:37:18 UTC
My laptop is HP 8760w. Audio system according to lspci:

00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation Cougar Point High Definition Audio Controller [8086:1c20] (rev 04)
	Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:1630]
Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel
01:00.1 Audio device [0403]: ATI Technologies Inc Device [1002:aa90]
	Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:1630]
Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel

(the latter is probably just the HDMA output).
This laptop has a two-color LED indicator which can be yellow or white, depending on whether sound is on or off. In my case it's always yellow, meaning, off.
When I tried gentoo live DVD 11.2, it was always white instead, but didn't work either.
Other then the color, it works fine.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Press the mute button
Actual Results:
Sound mutes :)

Expected Results:
LED changing color as well

The functionality you are asking about may not be supported in the gentoo-sources or vanilla kernels yet. I found this, though, which may be pertinent:

Comment 2 Morse 2011-10-24 10:43:42 UTC
So it's a kernel issue, right? I just didn't know if it's a kernel, alsa, or something else. Should I go to the kernel bugzilla with this instead?
Comment 3 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2011-12-11 19:26:12 UTC
The forum post mentions support in alsa 1.0.23. Alsa in 3.1.4 is at 1.0.24.

Can you please test with the latest gentoo-sources as of this writing to see if any progress has been made.

The latest gentoo-sources is now at 3.1.5
Comment 4 Morse 2011-12-12 15:45:29 UTC
Just checked the 3.1.5 gentoo-sources. Still the same. After some more tests, it turned out that technically, the LED does work: I can activate it manually with HDA analyzer by switching on flags "enabled" and "dir-out" on GPIO IO[0]. As I got it from changelogs, GPIO0 is chosen by default as a mute led if there is three or less GPIOs (I have three). Still don't understand why it's not like that in my case. May be I should provide some model name to the kernel image?
Comment 5 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2012-03-04 21:05:28 UTC
Please test with vanilla sources 3.2.9 and then bring to https://bugzilla.kernel.org/ if it still fails. Please post the url back here.
Comment 7 Morse 2012-03-08 14:59:11 UTC
Issue is solved by enabling CONFIG_SND_HDA_POWER_SAVE.
