Description Frossie 2011-10-18 06:08:45 UTC
upgrading the radeon drivers to 11.9 from 11.8 causes X to crash when resizing a konsole by dragging an edge. This might only be a problem with KDE 4.7.*. There is evidence that is is an upstream problem as I have seen it mentioned in other distributions, eg.

http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/pre-release-beta/466572-resizing-konsole-crashes-x-12-1-beta-1-kde-4-7-1-a-post2394730.html

The workaround is to downgrade ati-drivers to 11.8 and reboot the system.

Perhaps 11.9 should be masked? Is anybody else getting this?

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Install ati-drivers 11.9 on a KDE 4.7.2 system
2. Log into KDE and launch a konsole
3. Drag a side or corner to resize
Actual Results:
X crashes

I should add that I have experimented with building a kernel with and without direct rendering but that does not affect this bug.

You are correct this is a known regression of upstream catalyst 1.9 package. I guess AMD didn't tested it in KDE eheheh. Bad bad AMD ;).

About masking this release..... i dunno, let's also see what X11 team and Luca think about this. On one side this release might finally make GNOME 3 to work with fglrx. Additionally not every KDE will see the problem. For example I never manage to crash X, couse i use the yakuake drop down terminal (and i never resize it), but on the other side i can't switch off composite or play xonotic (which switch off composite for full screen windows) otherwise X would crash. This is also the first release shipping with PowerXpress suppot in gentoo.... but i can backport to 11.8 if needed.

@X11 team: don't stabilize this release please. Express an opinion about masking it or not if you wish.

Okay, well, since it only takes me a few minutes to switch from a working system to one triggering the crash, if anyone wants any kind of diagnostics let me know, I am happy to help.

I just bumped ati-drivers-11.10 to x11 overlay. If you want to test it and report if it solves the issue i thank you. For me it solved all regressions from 11.8

Cheers

ati-drivers-11.10 is in portage now. Please reopen if you still see the issue.
