Created attachment 289963 [details] apploader file demonstrating the failure caused by the system glib 32-bit libraries being put into VMWare's lib directory on amd64-multilib. This results in the apploader file in /tmp complaining about glib being the wrong ELF class, which can confirmed by the following: $ readelf -h /opt/vmware/lib/vmware/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0/libglib-2.0.so.0 | grep Class | awk '{print $2}' ELF32 This is being caused by the "remove superfluous libraries" code in the ebuild. Removing it fixes the ELF32 problem, but it introduces a new problem where vmware player tries to load the system glib library, and then fails because its bundled libraries are not binary compatible with the system glib library. A workaround for this issue is to run "VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_LIBS=force vmplayer". I imagine that a more permanent fix would be to configure vmware player to set VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_LIBS="force" whenever it is run, possibly by modifying /usr/share/applications/vmware-player.desktop, but I do not know how to do that.
