upgrading binutils on a gentoo server 

Reproducible: Always

Very likely you are running out of memory.
Try to reemerge with more swap enabled (and fewer programs running).
Removing MAKEOPTS=-j3 might also help.

while its compiling right now  i have below stats  from top -c 

Mem:    435132k total,   409276k used,    25856k free,    14168k buffers
Swap:   262140k total,   163816k used,    98324k free,   235072k cached

do you thing this is really a problem ?  i  have removed -j3

still compiling and below are the stats

Swap:   262140k total,   198492k used,    63648k free,    44252k cached

hi sorry, 

you were  right i have stopped apache/mysql / postfix / dovecot and emerge was successful
