Description Tom Hendrikx 2004-01-19 06:07:21 UTC
I assume this would be the best place for posting the bugs I found when testing the new 20040117 stages:

I started install from a Knoppix CD (since all 3 Gentoo Live-CD's I had laying around didn't like my laptop's pcmcia card), chrooted and started building.

I started with a stage 2:
Unpacking the tarball ends with:
./sbin/env-update.sh
./sbin/modules-update
./root/
./root/.keep
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

...without showing any noticeable errors. I tried this twice on the new install, and once in /tmp on another running box, with same results.

I decided to restart with stage1. It works great but I had some remarks:
- mounting:
handbook tells you to 'mkdir /mnt/gentoo/dev/', but this directory is already created (and filled) by the tarball (not sure whether the tarball or the handbook is erroneous).

- make.conf:
There's a typo in the default configuration: CXXFLAGS="$CFLAGS" This should be CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
There are no default GENTOO_MIRRORS in the file, which is quite annoying when you're not using a LiveCD (i.e. you can't use mirrorselect to update them).
It wold be very nice anyway when there was a full-fledged make.conf including all the comments and notes (just like in the default releases).

The rest of the install gave me no troubles and my laptop is now running a 2.6.1 kernel on top of the install:)

1.) I cannot reproduce your bug regarding extraction of the stages. I tried on two different machines. Can you please provide your version of tar (i.e. output of "emerge -p tar").

2.) The bug regarding the CXXFLAGS-setting is already known.
Comment 2 Tom Hendrikx 2004-01-20 10:01:31 UTC
emerge -p tar shows on both machines current stable version:
[ebuild R ] app-arch/tar-1.13.25-r3
