Exactly which VNC implementation are you using?
Wine doesn't use Qt. Could you please state precisely which applications fail to display menus over VNC?
Many applications, most of the WINE apps which have long drop down menus. The Bat for example. And native linux apps like FontForge have the same problem. I cannot tell you exactly what they share in common to trigger the problem. When you connect to the remote host with VNC everything looks normal expect the menus when you click on them you can only see the first items in the list, the items closer to the end are missing, there is empty space in the place of captions with only shortcuts _ visible. The pattern is random you can see first 4 items and have the rest 5 "invisible" or you can have first 3 items visible and the rest are not. The common thing is that the visible and not visible items aren't intermittent. The invisible items are always at the end of the list. The visible captions are starting the menu. When you roll mouse cursor over the item it becomes visible. That's what you see from VNC. At the local display everything looks normal. The Linux box is running tigervnc 1.0.1_p20110618-r1 with vnc plugin to xserver. And it's viewed from windows XP Sp3 with realvnc viewer. I tried other VNC viewers and they problem was there. You may want to ask for help from upstream on this one. Assigning to gentoo maintainer for tigervnc.
Yes, please talk with upstream
