Description Claudio Roberto França Pereira 2011-09-06 15:31:30 UTC
net-im/skype-2.2.0.35-r1 using all system memory on startup, apparently only on first run after booting, but it has opened correctly even on the first time seldomly.

Related topic:
http://community.skype.com/t5/Linux/Skype-eats-all-system-memory-Linux/td-p/222/

It seems it's an upstream problem, but maybe it's packaging related? The suggested workaround apparently doesn't stop the crash, just prevents the whole system from hanging.

Does [1] fix this issue?

If not, please:
1) post your `emerge --info net-im/skype' output.
2) run it from a terminal and capture the output there.

I've seen that post and I've created the folder, but can't say for sure that it has stopped crashing. I mean, it's not something easy to reproduce or desirable to test, since it can crash the whole machine. I've restarted Skype 3 times without any problems, but it appears generally after a cold boot.

Anyways, here comes my emerge --info skype:

# emerge --info skype

net-im/skype-2.2.0.35-r1 was built with the following:
USE="(consolekit) (multilib) (policykit) -qt-static"
Comment 3 Claudio Roberto França Pereira 2011-09-07 03:12:14 UTC
By the way, skype echoed no output when ran from the terminal.
Comment 4 Claudio Roberto França Pereira 2011-09-15 16:29:48 UTC
Confirmed that the Logs folder didn't solve the problem.
Also, I'm using PulseAudio as backend for Skype, someone somewhere said that this may be related, Skype wanting to play the startup sound and leaking memory in the process.

Binary-only package -> Upstream problem -> If you have a solution, reopen the bug.
