Comment 1 David Leadbeater 2002-06-17 11:09:30 UTC
Well bugzilla cut it off. It basically said "Please report this bug." so I did :)
Comment 2 Dan Armak (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-06-17 11:35:02 UTC
This hardly explains anything. Can you please give me the actual error and about 20 lines of output on either side? Bugzilla shouln't have problems with 30 or 40 lines, if it does mail them to me at danarmak@gentoo.org. But since you haven't captured the actual error I can't help you.
Comment 3 David Leadbeater 2002-06-17 12:39:58 UTC
sorry to be wasting your time - i did have the error but lost it, I'm waiting
the few hours it takes to run emerge kde again and i'll see if the same error
reoccurs.
Comment 4 David Leadbeater 2002-06-17 13:25:11 UTC
This is the error I got this time - last time I ran it it gave a proper ld error
and something about Please Report the Bug.

I guess the g++ versions and so on are relevant (maybe i should upgrade to gcc 3.0?)

I must admit I don't really know what could be causing this. Let's try changing several ld-related things to jolt this problem. 1. If you don't have the latest portage (2.0.1), emerge it. 2. If you have sandbox enabled, disable it. (Those are carpaski's ideas)
Comment 8 Dan Armak (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-06-18 16:07:58 UTC
Also: segfaults (sig 11's) are in 90+% of the cases caused by flaky hardware
configs, out of memory/swap errors, etc. In which case they shouldn't be
reproducible, or not exactly so, if you run them in a sufficiently different
situation (e.g. with a lot of memory usage or conversely, with little memory
usage and after a reboot). So I don't know how far that applies here.
Comment 9 Dan Armak (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-07-09 17:18:17 UTC
Are you still there? Have you succeeded in emerging kdebase (3.0.2 by now)? Did
you try my suggestions? Can we close this ;-)
Comment 10 David Leadbeater 2002-07-09 18:31:56 UTC
I still haven't managed - it could be bad hardware but i doubt it (memtest86
reports no errors), I've experienced it on two different kernels (2.4.18-xfs and
2.4.19-gentoo).
I've got as far as kdemultimedia now - but I'm still seeing the segfaults from
ld in seemingly random places.
If i can provide any other useful information tell me what..

Azarah: maybe you have some idea? drobbins recommended that I ask you.

Random ld segfaults are defninitely an instability of some sort. Since the
segfaults are in the linking stage, this isn't a case of cpu overloading or
out of memory situation. Hmm...

Comment 12 Martin Schlemmer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-07-10 17:01:56 UTC
Hrm, maybe try binutils-2.12.90.0.7 ? This is btw what I think you Dan and
also Verwilst uses, no ?
Comment 13 Dan Armak (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-07-10 17:45:16 UTC
Yes, I do. Well, please try it :-)
Comment 14 David Leadbeater 2002-07-12 07:03:12 UTC
Trying that and I get a totally different error this time in kdebase:
(excuse the typing - i forgot to run emerge inside screen)
...

(same error for VERSION line 44)

Comment 15 Martin Schlemmer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-07-16 17:05:22 UTC
You dont maybe use ccache ?
Comment 16 Dan Armak (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-07-26 11:19:45 UTC
Yes, if you do you'd probably have to purge it after updating binutils.
Comment 17 Bill Sirinek 2002-07-28 20:31:19 UTC
Just my 2c worth here...

I'll bet you money that this is the problem discussed at
http://www.bitwizard.nl/sig11

I used to have hardware that flaked out on long compiles, and I tried memtest86
with no errors. Its definitely not an ebuild issue :)
Comment 18 David Leadbeater 2002-08-06 14:41:24 UTC
I didn't want to blame hardware, but I guess that's the problem :(
*hides for wasting your time*
