i3status from the portage tree gives the following error message:

Could not open "/sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp"

The thermal zone driver is built in the kernel but that file is not present.

Reproducible: Always

Looks like you're missing CONFIG_THERMAL and/or CONFIG_ACPI_THERMAL. Still it's not a bug in i3status. You can disable cpu_temperature reading in config file.
