1. Don't use pastebins for bugzilla reports - just attach the files
2. Don't use use bugzilla for support questions - there's the forum
Comment 6 brad 2011-08-21 21:38:37 UTC
When knuckles, been on the gentoo support page reporting the exact same question for 5 days.
This is a bug because all are clueless on the irc.
I will glady stop pastebin'ing when you guys fix your character # restriction.
That's total bullshit.
Comment 7 brad 2011-08-22 02:06:15 UTC
It's not an enduser error you idiot.
Comment 8 Jeremy Olexa (darkside) (RETIRED) archtester gentoo-dev Security 2011-08-22 21:16:13 UTC
Brad, there is no need for name calling. I understand that you may be frustrated but such language will not gather a reponse any quicker and actually make people just ignore your issues. Understand that we are all volunteers, who contribute because we like to. Especially Rafał, with untold hours of bug wrangling. Let's continue to be constructive here.

So, the next steps of the bug wrangling is:
1) Identify an actual bug, instead of "something doesn't work" and then modify the summary
2) Attach supporting files to the report instead of relying on a third party service which cannot be relied upon.
3) Then the bug can/will be assigned to the proper person that may be able to help better.
Comment 9 Alexandre Rostovtsev (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-08-22 22:17:54 UTC
Brad, generally speaking, bugzilla is a tool that is best used for reporting very specific bugs with a clear explanation for how a developer could reproduce them. Something like "foo-bar/wombat-1.2.3-r4 with the default configuration segfaults at startup when built with USE=hardened; version 1.2.1 runs correctly; here is a backtrace from the crash". These quickly get assigned to the right person and quickly get fixed.

Of course, sometimes, one has to report an issue that is either more general ("after emerge world two days ago, something is causing my network connection to disconnect every 30 minutes") or hard to reproduce ("this large and complicated application crashes after several hours of use when processing a long document that I cannot upload to bugzilla because it contains proprietary information"). However, in such cases, it's significantly harder for Gentoo developers to figure out where the bug is and how to fix it. As a result, the process of fixing it takes much, much longer - and all too often, a bug of that sort only gets fixed months or years later as a side effect of some other change.

And then there are issues that aren't bugs per se, but are simply the consequence of not being familiar with how to configure a particular set of programs to do what you want them to do. And if that is the case, and you want someone to help you through the series of steps needed to configure a non-buggy (but possibly rather user-unfriendly) piece of software, then bugzilla is not appropriate; such a report is likely to be closed or ignored. If one has questions about configuration, generally the best way to start is by carefully reading all documentation (on gentoo.org, on upstream developer's website, on various distros' wikis, etc.), using google, and if that fails, asking on the forum or IRC.

I meant to say. Please file a new bug report so that developers looking at it don't feel like you might be about to insult anyone again.
