When I run the anime in the container mkv, mplayer hangs. I don't know whether updating @world updated mplayer2 for you or not, so please reemerge mplayer2 to see if there was some temporary inconsistency.
I did it, but still Mplayer2 crash. I installed Mplayer, but it also falls on mkv files.
Problem solved updating libass to version 0.9.13.
