Can you post your configs for both kernels? You don't seem to have the lp module loaded in the 3.0 kernel, and that's why you don't have any /dev/lpx devices. Have you CONFIG_PRINTER=[y|m] in the 3.0 kernel config? Thanks.

Yeap, that should resolve your issue (although you'll need to update it with every major kernel release, ie 3.1, 3.2 etc). I'm going to submit a patch for openrc to fix that issue. Thanks.
