Description Patrick ALLAERT 2011-08-05 13:42:11 UTC
Compiling git with the "perl" USE flag should allow to use:

$ git grep -P <pattern>

From the manual:

$ git help grep
[...]
-P, --perl-regexp
    Use Perl-compatible regexp for patterns. Requires libpcre to be compiled in.
[...]

Actual message shown is:
fatal: cannot use Perl-compatible regexes when not compiled with USE_LIBPCRE

The issue here is not with the perl use flag, but, all versions of git in our tree do not link against dev-libs/libpcre if the pcre use flag is on.

Well... yes, you rephrased somewhat my problem.

I expect git to link against dev-libs/libpcre when the already existing "perl" flag is used.

Alternatively, a new "pcre" flag could be used for that specific purpose, but in all case, it is impossible for now to have a working git aware of Perl regex "-P, --perl-regexp".
