I have a LVM volume that does not mount during boot. Volume group is not active.

I am not using an initrd.

From tracing through the sysinit boot sequence, the problem appears to be that when the lvm-start script is executed (from the lvm init script in boot runlevel), the root filesystem is still read-only and the volume group is not marked as active.

My work around at the moment is to mount the volume in a /etc/local.d script.

#eselect rc list boot
Init scripts to be started by runlevel boot
  bootmisc
  device-mapper
  fsck
  hostname
  hwclock
  keymaps
  localmount
  lvm
  mdraid
  modules
  mtab
  net.lo
  procfs
  root
  swap
  sysctl
  sysfs
  termencoding
  urandom

# eselect rc list sysinit
Init scripts to be started by runlevel sysinit
  devfs
  dmesg
  udev

---[/etc/fstab]---
/dev/sda1 /boot ext2 defaults,auto,noatime 1 2
/dev/sda3 / ext4 defaults,noatime 0 1
/dev/sda2 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,ro 0 0
/dev/VCSLib/SCMData /var/lib/vcslib ext4 auto,defaults,noatime 0 0
---[eof]---

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a logical volume (not root), don't use initrd, put LVM into fstab
2. Boot system
3.
Actual Results:
LVM volume is not mounted

Expected Results:
LVM volume is mounted during boot.

I have the same issue.

sys-fs/lvm2-2.02.73-r1
sys-apps/baselayout-2.0.3
sys-apps/openrc-0.8.3-r1

It seems lvm is not even started during the boot. Adding rc_localmount_need="lvm" to /etc/rc.conf doesn't help.

$ eselect rc list boot | grep lvm
  lvm

This is really unpleasant.

Please provide a full boot log that shows why LVM isn't starting (It should have an error).

LVM should be able to start fine when when root is still read-only, because /dev is on tmpfs, and we pass the sysinit flags to ensure LVM doesn't write anything else.
