Description Dustin J. Mitchell 2011-08-01 17:33:38 UTC
The nfsmount service runs
 mount -a -t nfs,nfs4
at startup, and it fails with a segmentation fault:

knuth ~ # /etc/init.d/nfsmount start
 * Starting NFS sm-notify ...                                                                                                                                                                                                           [ ok ]
 * Mounting NFS filesystems ...
/etc/init.d/nfsmount: line 27: 13454 Segmentation fault      mount -a -t nfs,nfs4                                                                                                                                                       [ !! ]
 * ERROR: nfsmount failed to start

Running this command from the command line duplicates the failure; here's the strace:

open("/etc/mtab", O_RDONLY)             = 3
umask(022)                              = 077
fstat(3, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=1138, ...}) = 0
mmap(NULL, 4096, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x7fa8f8fa4000
read(3, "rootfs / rootfs rw 0 0\n/dev/root"..., 4096) = 1138
read(3, "", 4096)                       = 0
close(3)                                = 0
munmap(0x7fa8f8fa4000, 4096)            = 0
--- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) ---
+++ killed by SIGSEGV +++
Segmentation fault

Running simply 'mount euclid:/home /home' works just fine.

This seems similar to this old forum post:
 http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-257558-start-0.html
but that doesn't have any resolution.

I've tried re-emerging sys-apps/util-linux to no avail.

Reproducible: Always

please post the output of `emerge --info util-linux`

testing the latest version would be helpful as well (2.19.1-r1)
Comment 2 Dustin J. Mitchell 2011-08-21 14:49:17 UTC
Huh, I wasn't notified of this comment. At any rate, a few things have changed now, and things work.
 - removed nfs4 support from the kernel (2.6.39-gentoo-r3)
 - specified 'nfs' and not 'nfs4' in fstab
 - upgraded to sys-util/util-linux-2.19.1-r1

I'd do some more experimentation to figure out *which* fixed it, but this host is my mail server, among other things -- which probably explains missing the bugzilla notification!
