The mentioned kernels are not able to power off several computers. gentoo-2.4.20-r9 or the older test-candidates of 2.6 (test-9?) were able to power them off. All computers (I personally know 3 different ones, but heard about that problem from other people, too) have ACPI-Support. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:
ACPI support and APM support have both had attention in the ast few releases. also SMP will caus eissues with ACPI. If your still having the problems with 2.6.1_rc1 then please try gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.2_rc3 when it is release or 2.6.2 final. it should be a mtter of days till it hits the tree.
Using gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.0, 2.6.1_r1, 2.6.2, 2.6.3_r2, no change. I see the message "acpi_power_off" at the ending but Acer Laptop 634LC (ALI Chipset) keeps running. Shutdown works with vanilla (developement-sources) and knoppix 3.4. (and 2.4.2X worked always) SMP is not in kernel. I tested vanilla 2.6.1 and gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.x with same settings.
Okay, I made a few tests: The problem still exists on 2 PCs. I tested it with the newest vanilla 2.6.3-rc3 and it's still not gone. Time to reopen the bug...
OK, since this is in the upstream vanilla sources can you please file a bug at http://bugme.osdl.org; we can't do much about this as the problem is in the underlying vanilla sources which we don't maintain. Thanks.
Seems to be this one: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1355 But why then knoppix-2.6-kernel works on my machines, but gentoo-dev don't?
acpi_power_off now works on the Acer Travelmate 634 with the gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.9-r13 13 seems to be a lucky number :-)
