I did not find the time to create a proper backtrace yet, but I quickly upgraded sane-backends to version 1.0.22-r1 and noticed that it fixes the problem for me!
Closing then as this was a bug in sane-backends it seems (I hope that new version is stabilized soon... but looks like sane stuff is a bit orphan :S)
