Description Spider (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-01-08 11:56:48 UTC
okay, I'm fairly fed up with the incessant bugs that pop up asking us to put the latest bleeding edge cvs snapshot of gnome 2.5, making gimp development trees, the latest evolution 1.5 beta (that requires cvs versions of gtkhtml fex. ) and other -BETA- and -DEVELOPMENT- releases into ~arch because its just "~" and therefore broken.

This could probably be reduced a bit by further clarifying that ACCEPT_KEYWORDS is -not- for -broken- /development packages, but for --testing ebuilds-- and stabilizing those into the tree.

This misconception has spawned more and more bugreports and meanless discussions which are frankly getting in the way and adding more flamage than average recently.

Reproducible: Sometimes
Steps to Reproduce:
1. get involved with a major project
2. watch it release high profile beta /development packages
3. get annoying bugs.

Actual Results:
Flamage abroad and incessant requests for builds and the demand that you qualify
yourself lest the bugs get reopened because they dislike the answer.

Expected Results:
clearer documentation that doesn't confuse people

suggested solution :
# Gentoo is using a new masking system to allow for easier stability testing
# on ebuilds. KEYWORDS are used in ebuilds to mask and unmask packages based
# on the platform they are set for. A special form has been added that
# indicates packages and revisions that are expected to work, but have not yet
# been approved for the stable set. '~arch' is a superset of 'arch' which
# includes the packages in testings. Users of the 'x86' architecture
# would add '~x86' to ACCEPT_KEYWORDS to enable unstable/testing packages.
# '~ppc', '~sparc' are the unstable KEYWORDS for their respective platforms.
# please note that this is not for development releases or further beta
# packages, but may have more recent releases that cause incompabilities with
# the defined "stable" tree.
# DO NOT PUT ANYTHING BUT YOUR SPECIFIC ~ARCHITECTURE IN THE LIST.
# IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF YOUR ARCH, OR THE IMPLICATIONS, DO NOT MODIFY THIS.

you kind of neglected to list the documents you want updated ;)

oops.. /etc/make.conf :)
Comment 3 Nicholas Jones (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-01-11 16:48:04 UTC
How's this:

# Gentoo is using a new masking system to allow for easier stability testing
# on packages. KEYWORDS are used in ebuilds to mask and unmask packages based
# on the platform they are set for. A special form has been added that
# indicates packages and revisions that are expected to work, but have not yet
# been approved for the stable set. '~arch' is a superset of 'arch' which
# includes the unstable, in testing, packages. Users of the 'x86' architecture
# would add '~x86' to ACCEPT_KEYWORDS to enable unstable/testing packages.
# '~ppc', '~sparc' are the unstable KEYWORDS for their respective platforms.
#
# Please note that this is not for development, alpha, beta, nor cvs release
# packages. "Broken" packages will not be added to testing and should not be
# requested to be added. Alternative routes are available to developers
# for experimental packages, and it is at their discretion to use them.
#
# DO NOT PUT ANYTHING BUT YOUR SPECIFIC ~ARCHITECTURE IN THE LIST.
# IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF YOUR ARCH, OR THE IMPLICATIONS, DO NOT MODIFY THIS.

yep, that looks good to me.
Comment 5 Marius Mauch (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-02-08 17:55:23 UTC
supposed to be fixed in 2.0.50 which is stable now. If this bug is not fixed please reopen.
