Description Jessica Leigh 2011-07-14 03:19:09 UTC
Updated to libpng-1.4.8 the other day, and have been having some trouble. I can't seem to get the vlc (1.1.10) interface working properly... opening vlc from the KDE menu doesn't work at all, nor does right-clicking on a video and trying to open with vlc. I can play videos with vlc from the command line (e.g., 'vlc video.avi'), but I don't get any menubar and right-click on the video to open up the usual menu doesn't do anything.

I tried running from the command line with 'vlc -v' and got the following message:

VLC media player 1.1.10 The Luggage (revision exported)
[0x1ddb150] main libvlc warning: cannot load module `/usr/lib64/vlc/plugins/gui/libqt4_plugin.so' (libpng.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
Blocked: call to unsetenv("DBUS_ACTIVATION_ADDRESS")
Blocked: call to unsetenv("DBUS_ACTIVATION_BUS_TYPE")
[0x1ddb150] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
Remote control interface initialized. Type `help' for help.

So it looks like this is probably related to the libpng update... but I'm not sure how to fix it. I've installed libpng-1.2.45 in addition to 1.4.8 in order to get google-talkplugin to work, but clearly libpng.so.3 is not part of this package. I've tried using equery to find which libpng version might contain this file, but got no result. I also checked the ebuild for vlc-1.1.10, and it seems to think it depends only on libpng, not a particular version.
Comment 1 Ben Sagal 2011-07-14 05:52:55 UTC
have you re-emeged vlc, and run revdep-rebuild (from app-portage/gentoolkit) since the upgrade?

also please post the output of emerge --info.
Comment 2 Rafał Mużyło 2011-07-14 12:06:40 UTC
It will be a revdep-rebuild case (unless dlopen is somehow involved) -libpng-1.4.8 doesn't create libpng.so.3 symlink.
Comment 3 Jessica Leigh 2011-07-14 14:01:36 UTC
Yes, I tried both revdep-rebuild and re-emerging vlc (in that order). The only broken files that revdep-rebuild found are the following, all related to a program called mendeley (totally unrelated to vlc):

 * !!! /usr/local/lib64/libMendeley.so.0.9.9 not owned by any package is broken !!!
 *   /usr/local/lib64/libMendeley.so.0.9.9 -> (none)
 * !!! /usr/local/lib64/libQtGui.so.4 not owned by any package is broken !!!
 *   /usr/local/lib64/libQtGui.so.4 -> (none)
 * !!! /usr/local/lib64/mendeleydesktop/libexec/mendeleydesktop.x86_64 not owned by any package is broken !!!
 *   /usr/local/lib64/mendeleydesktop/libexec/mendeleydesktop.x86_64 -> (none)
 * !!! /usr/local/lib64/mendeleydesktop/libexec/mendeleydesktop.x86_64.mendeleyupdateold not owned by any package is broken !!!
 *   /usr/local/lib64/mendeleydesktop/libexec/mendeleydesktop.x86_64.mendeleyupdateold -> (none)
 * !!! /usr/local/lib64/mendeleydesktop/plugins/imageformats/libqjpeg.so not owned by any package is broken !!!
 *   /usr/local/lib64/mendeleydesktop/plugins/imageformats/libqjpeg.so -> (none)

Here's my emerge --info output:

I wouldn't call "/usr/local/lib64/libQtGui.so.4" an unrelated problem.

It's more like a pretty good reason to mark the bug as INVALID.
Comment 5 Jessica Leigh 2011-07-14 18:40:43 UTC
I disagree. Note the 'local' in /usr/local/lib64/libQtGui.so.4. I know for certain that this particular file comes with mendeley (I just double-checked, diff versus the same file in a freshly extracted mendeley 0.9.9 archive produces no differences). This file may also have a problem with the libpng upgrade, but that's not what I'm reporting in this bug report.

This bug report remains valid because I'm describing a problem with vlc, which isn't working right because apparently /usr/lib64/vlc/plugins/gui/libqt4_plugin.so can't be loaded (not the absence of 'local' in this library path: this is actually created when vlc is emerged).

Regardless of my problems with things that I installed without using emerge, the problem with vlc is a problem with vlc in portage.
Comment 6 Rafał Mużyło 2011-07-14 19:13:07 UTC
Oh, but '/usr/local' is exactly the part that makes it it invalid - portage can't fix (more exactly, revdep-rebuild) what's not managed by it.

If there is more than one library with the same SONAME, only the first found is considered. By default, '/usr/local/lib' is searched before '/usr/lib', so having a broken lib there will break your system, even if the one in '/usr/lib' is OK.
Comment 7 Jessica Leigh 2011-07-14 19:45:51 UTC
OK, so I've now removed all of mendeley, re-run revdep-rebuild. No broken libraries are detected now, and vlc is still broken, with the same error message:

cannot load module `/usr/lib64/vlc/plugins/gui/libqt4_plugin.so' (libQtGui.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
Comment 8 Jessica Leigh 2011-07-14 19:46:58 UTC
Oops, guess that's a slightly different error message. But it's still not working... I'll try re-emerging vlc again and report back.
Comment 9 Jessica Leigh 2011-07-14 19:58:09 UTC
Thanks! Now that mendeley is gone, and vlc has been re-emerged, it all works fine.
