Description Michael Mol 2011-07-08 18:53:27 UTC
This morning, I ran emerge --sync && emerge --update --deep --newuse world. It had 69 packages to build, and wine was in the final ten or so packages. Wine failed to build.

Prior to the update, 1.2.1 is installed. I don't believe I've changed any USE flags since my last build of WINE; --newuse is simply habitual.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge --update --deep --newuse wine

Actual Results:
>>> Messages generated by process 11817 on 2011-07-08 11:30:34 EDT for package app-emulation/wine-1.2.3:

ERROR: compile

  (no error message)

Call stack:

The specific snippet of code:
          emake -C "${builddir}" all || die;

If you need support, post the output of 'emerge --info =app-emulation/wine-1.2.3',
the complete build log and the output of 'emerge -pqv =app-emulation/wine-1.2.3'.
The complete build log is located at '/var/tmp/portage/app-emulation/wine-1.2.3/temp/build.log'.
The ebuild environment file is located at '/var/tmp/portage/app-emulation/wine-1.2.3/temp/environment'.
S: '/var/tmp/portage/app-emulation/wine-1.2.3/work/wine-1.2.3'

---

Also, /var/tmp/portage/app-emulation/ is missing after this; emerge deleted it. I had to create a hardlink to the build.log and environment files during the build in order to preserve their contents. I will attach them in a moment; they're several hundred K to over a meg long.

Expected Results:
A successful build and update.

Failing that, something more specific than (no error message) for an error message.

Failing that, not erasing the directory tree containing the build.log file.

Comment 4 Michael Mol 2011-07-08 19:31:03 UTC
Thoughts:

1) I don't know why this bug only hit me now, and at no time between when #354745 was filed and now.

2) There are still two significant problems with emerge's behavior in this case; I had to jump through hoops to pull useful debugging information out of the error.
2a) I had to hardlink the build.log and emerge files to get their contents after the emerge failed.
2b) Emerge gave (no error message) as the reason for failure, which doesn't make any sense.

I'm not certain that this should be marked resolved yet, when there are still weird aspects of it.
