Description Florian Berger 2011-07-05 10:25:33 UTC
The build process of nessus-core-2.2.9-r1 tries to run the pcap-config script. This script was introduced in libpcap 1.0.0. However, nessus-core-2.2.9-r1 does not depend on >=net-libs/libpcap-1.0.0.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge '=libpcap-0.9.8'
2. echo net-analyzer/nessus-core >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
3. emerge '=nessus-core-2.2.9-r1'
Actual Results:
The build process yields:

i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -Wl,-O1 -Wl,--as-needed `sh ./cflags` nessus-check-signature.o -o nessus-check-signature `/usr/bin/nasl-config --libs` `/usr/bin/nessus-config --libs` -ldl -lwrap `pcap-config --libs`
/bin/sh: pcap-config: command not found
/usr/lib/libnessus.so: undefined reference to `pcap_close'
/usr/lib/libnessus.so: undefined reference to `pcap_perror'
/usr/lib/libnessus.so: undefined reference to `pcap_open_live'
/usr/lib/libnessus.so: undefined reference to `pcap_compile'
/usr/lib/libnessus.so: undefined reference to `pcap_lookupnet'
/usr/lib/libnessus.so: undefined reference to `pcap_datalink'
/usr/lib/libnessus.so: undefined reference to `pcap_setfilter'
/usr/lib/libnessus.so: undefined reference to `pcap_lookupdev'
/usr/lib/libnessus.so: undefined reference to `pcap_next'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[1]: *** [nessus-check-signature] Error 1

Expected Results:
The ebuild should compile without errors.

Upgrading to libpcap >= 1.0 fixes the problem.

Comment 1 Tim Harder gentoo-dev 2011-09-12 06:36:27 UTC
Please attach a full build log.

Also, the problem looks more like you compiled nessus-libraries (the package that actually requires libpcap) with a newer version of libpcap, then downgraded libpcap causing the libnessus.so library to break, then tried to compile nessus-core against the broken library causing the failure you posted.
Comment 2 Tim Harder gentoo-dev 2011-09-12 07:20:23 UTC
And <net-libs/libpcap-1.0.0 was recently removed from the tree too so closing.
