Description Kevin Woldt 2011-06-15 15:21:09 UTC
I use net-mail/davmail as gateway to connect to an Exchange Server. Davmail opens a new port localhost:1143, where I can connect with evolution. Additional I configured a proxy to http://example.com:8080 with the Network Proxy Preferences, except localhost and 127.0.0.0/8 . On startup evolutions tries to connect to the proxy although the imap server is configured as localhost:1143 .

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. System -> Preferences -> Network Proxy
Manual proxy configuration
Use the same proxy for all protocols
HTTP proxy: http://example.com 8080
Ignored Hosts: localhost; 127.0.0.0/8

2. Applications -> Office -> DavMail Gateway
Configure Davmail IMAP to listen to port 1143

3. Applications -> Office -> Evolution Mail and Calendar
Create IMAP account with server localhost:1143
Actual Results:
Evolution now tries to connect to the proxy example.com and fails to download the mails because of connection timeout.

# netstat -p
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name
tcp 0 0 woldtkevin.exampl:38086 example.com:8088 VERBUNDEN 28825/evolution

Even if you configure evolution not to use the system settings but to connect directly, evolution connects to the proxy.

Expected Results:
I expect that evolution respects the ingnored hosts list or if it is configured to connect directly to not connect to the proxy.

I forgot:
1. If I remove the proxy setting, evolutions connect to localhost:1143, as expected.
2. mail-client/thunderbird-bin-3.1.10 works correct with the proxy setting.
Comment 3 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2011-06-15 15:46:47 UTC
Try with mail-client/evolution-2.32.2-r3 and gnome-extra/evolution-data-server-2.32.2-r1
Comment 4 Kevin Woldt 2011-06-17 09:20:29 UTC
Does not solve the problem.
Comment 5 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-06-17 12:27:31 UTC
so DavMail is a Exchange/IMAP gateway ? Why don't you use evolution-exchange or evolution-mapi (which is not in tree iirc but you can give a shot at the ebuild) ?
Comment 6 Kevin Woldt 2011-06-17 13:52:37 UTC
In my memory evolution-exchange is only for exchange 2003 and you need samba 4 for evolution-mapi. I tried evolution-mapi, but it crashed randomly. Also, I do not want to be dependent on evolution. I want it, because of the integration into gnome. But maybe in future thunderbird becomes better, opera will support calendar or my company decides to migrate to exchange 20whatever, then a switch is easier with a gateway, which knows the proprietary interface than some plugins, which maybe aren't maintained anymore.

However the problem is to connect to somewhere without using the proxy. I guess a major feature is broken.
Comment 7 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2011-06-19 11:00:11 UTC
Maybe the problem is caused by some conflict between proxy system settings (from System menu) and evolution proxy settings. Please try configuring evolution to "Use system settings" and, then, configure them from gnome-network-properties
Comment 8 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2011-06-19 21:36:30 UTC
Please retry with evolution-data-server-2.32.3 and evolution-2.32.3
Comment 9 Kevin Woldt 2011-06-20 09:18:29 UTC
(In reply to comment #7)

This way I describe in the section "Steps to Reproduce". In evolution:
- Use system settings = connection to proxy
- Direct connect = connection to proxy
- Manual settings with all fields empty = connection to proxy

The only way it works is if I use direct connection in gnome-network-properties. Logically, then I have no proxy in other programs, so this isn't a workaround.

> Please retry with evolution-data-server-2.32.3 and evolution-2.32.3

problem persists
Comment 10 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2011-06-20 09:28:28 UTC
Report this to upstream then and post the link here -> bugzilla.gnome.org
Comment 11 Kevin Woldt 2011-06-20 09:32:12 UTC
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/773908 describes the same problem. Comment #9 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/773908/comments/9) lists a workaround which works for me:

1. set direct connection in gnome-network-properties
2. start evolution
3. reset proxy settings in gnome-network-properties

Maybe this patch applied to evolution could help you:
