After completing an install on a SparcEngine Ultra AXe, the typing anything on the PS/2 keyboard generates garbage on the screen. The solution is to use the keyboard map from i386. An addendum to the Sparc install docs mentioning this would be appreciated. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Install to HD 2.Reboot 3.Type Actual Results: Garbage on Screen Expected Results: Generated correct text. I solved this problem myself with this newsgroup post. http://groups.google.com/groups?q=ultra+axi+keymap+linux&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&c2coff=1&safe=off&selm=370B5FC4.A27E15FE%40unicent.com&rnum=1
Is this a /etc/rc.conf setting?
Yeah. KEYMAP in /etc/rc.conf. For some clones and the USB-based sparcs it needs to be set to an x86-like setting. For other sparcs running a 2.4 kernel it should be "sunkeymap". Under 2.6 things seem to work best if the setting is commented out entirely.
Any suggestions on how (and if) this should be worded? I don't know the sparc architecture/community so I'm in the dark if this is something trivial, broad or must-know. With an x86-like setting you mean "qwerty"?
A normal x86 style keymap, such as "us" should work fine for this. The sparcs with USB keyboards use keymaps the same way and it works fine.
Created attachment 23139 [details, diff] Patch to hb-install-config.xml I assumed that this is something other architectures can benefit from too. When I look at /usr/share/keymaps I don't see every architecture listed so I've generalised this. Would this be okay?
The problem here, and I can't speak for other arches, is that only the sparc systems with USB keyboards, or Ultra AXE systems will want this. Otherwise, everyone else will want the regular sunkeymap entry, or a sun keyboard entry for their region.
Okay, so it's not general :) I'll rewrite it, just a sec
Created attachment 23144 [details, diff] Patch 2 to hb-install-config.xml Okay, this one clearly specifies USB-based SPARC systems and SPARC clones.
Looks good to me :)
Ciaran, can you gimme your blessing as SPARC-dude on this? :)
ooh nm, I thought weeve was of a different arch, sorry
