If I emerge latest KDE (not using any specific profile), with alsa + gstreamer/phonon enabled, sound output in KDE does not work. As a side effect login/logoff/shutdown also does not do anything. alsa-sound itself is working fine which can be tested by speaker-test app. The reason for the sound not working is that it seems that KDE requires some of the gstreamer output plugins to be available - enabling +ogg +vorbis +flac solvers the issue (found solution here - http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-880553-start-0.html). I think it would make sense if KDE ebuild will check that if gstreamer output is enabled, that all gstreamer KDE-required output plugins are enabled too. Not every users knows which gst-plugins KDE is using to properly configure their system manually, there should be automatic dependency check.
