Did you restart DBus/your entire system?
Comment 2 PM 2011-06-14 14:37:22 UTC
I figured it out. It was actually emerge --depclean removing x11-misc/notification-daemon for some reason. Still, this shouldn't have happened, right?

Weird. Do you have USE="libnotify" set? Then wicd should depend on python-notify which depends on x11-libnotify which depends on virtual/notification-daemon. If emerge --depclean remvoed it then it's a bug in the package manager.
Comment 4 PM 2011-06-14 15:48:06 UTC
Yes, I have this flag set. What's even weirder, portage also removed app-editors/nano, which is part of the system profile. Maybe that's simply what I get for using alpha versions of portage...

Please file a bug for the portage failure. I'll close this one here but you can still reference to it in your portage bug. Thanks for reporting.
Comment 6 PM 2011-06-14 15:58:10 UTC
Huh. Guess what. It's not a bug, it's a feature!

Comment 7 Thomas Kahle (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-06-14 16:05:25 UTC
Your's looks more like comment #7 in that bug to me. You may want to comment with your case to provide more examples.
Comment 8 PM 2011-06-14 16:09:50 UTC
No, I actually also have kde-base/knotify installed (which satisfies virtual/notification-daemon), but the KDE's notification system is buggy and ugly, so I disabled it.
Comment 9 Thomas Kahle (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2011-06-14 18:30:38 UTC
ok, so the "established solution" for you is to put your favorite notification daemon into your world file.
