Description far jump 2011-06-12 04:40:47 UTC
Brand new system, clean simple Gentoo install (no GUI). install cups, hplip
connect a (known to be working) HP laserjet and run hp-setup

This replaced an older existing server with multiple USB devices and custom designed hardware and software. Everything works except this printer.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install cups
2. connect printer
3. print test page
Actual Results:
>grep backend /var/log/cups/error_log
D [11/Jun/2011:23:31:09 -0400] [Job 27] Printer stopped due to backend errors; please consult the error_log file for details.
D [11/Jun/2011:23:46:04 -0400] [Job 30] Started backend /usr/libexec/cups/backend/hp (PID 2362)

>grep -C1 backend /var/log/messages

Expected Results:
the printer should print :)

I believe this is a permissions problem. I enabled usb printer in kernel and configured cups as: deviceURL: parallel:/dev/usb/lp0. At first I got the same kind of error (/usr/libexec/cups/backend/parallel failed). But, then I changed permissions on /dev/usb/lp0

chmod 666 /dev/usb/lp0

now it works perfectly. serves as local and network printer. Of course,if we install another printer we could have printer port confusion if printer are not powered up in proper order. which is why hplip is nice, assigning printers by their serial number.

Please post the output of `emerge -vpq net-print/cups' too.

Is this still a problem with current cups-1.5?
